Marriage & Family Therapy Retreats

Helping Families & Couples Grow and Heal in a Beautiful Non-clinical Vacation Setting

San Juan del Sur
San Juan del Sur is a small community of approximately 10,000 residents that maintains its natural culture, charm and beauty while increasingly assuming the comforts of an international resort. Located approximately 20 miles north of the Costa Rican border, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur is couched on a narrow (10 mile wide) isthmus that separates the Pacific Ocean from Lago (lake) Nicaragua. This unique geographical setting creates its own weather pattern that assures a consistent offshore breeze, large surf and less rain during the rainy season (June through November). In addition, these offshore breezes dramatically reduce humidity and provide the region with average temperatures 7 degrees cooler than the Guanacaste region of C.R, its direct neighbor to the south. (This is not 7 degrees you'll ever miss!!)

Lago Nicaragua, lying ten miles to the east, is approximately a third of the size of Lake Michigan and is unique in many ways, the least of which being the fact that it is home to the world's only fresh water sharks and the island (Ometepe) made up by two mile high (almost) volcanoes, one of which remains active.

What to do when not in therapy sessions…..

Surf - Nicaragua has a remarkable number of world class surf breaks such as Manzanillo, Colorado, Madera, and Popoyo all of which are frequently featured in Surfer magazine.

Getting There

Travel from Managua or Liberia, Costa Rica is approximately 2 1/2 hours. Rental Cars are available, however if you are comfortable with use of our ATVs it may not be necessary to have a vehicle once at the Villa.

Travel from Costa Rica involves crossing the border south of SJDS. This is not a tough transit; however it does require a walk across the border and switching buses or taxis.

Travel between Managua and San Juan del Sur is typically easier and can be arranged in advance through Adelante Express - the owners speak English and the vehicles are very nice. Rates and reservations are available through their web site
http://www.adelanteexpress.com
They can also be phoned at: 011 (505) 850-6070

Travel by taxi from Managua is also readily available for approximately $60 US, for up to three people. Any of the cabs waiting in front of the airport will gladly take you to SJDS.

If renting a car we recommend one of the subcompact SUVs. The roads in the area are not good, if you are not comfortable with use of one of our ATVs a 4 wheel drive vehicle will be a great advantage for getting back and forth to the Villa and to all of the best beaches. Four wheel-drive is not essential, but it is highly recommended. Small SUVs rent for around $35 daily w/o insurance and are less expensive when rented at the airport. In San Juan del Sur there is currently only one car rental agency: http://www.alamonicaragua.com
